Here at Swoope Hair in Birmingham, our goal is to help women learn to care for their natural hair! A big part of that is the hair habits you form outside our natural hair salon. If you’re new to rocking natural hair, or are concerned about length, it’s important to focus on the health of the hair. That’s why in today’s blog, we’re sharing a few tips that you should practice to help you achieve your natural hair goals.
Feed Your Hair
Healthy hair starts from within! That doesn’t mean you have to become vegan or cut out sugar, but you should work to include fruits and veggies, as well as drink lots of water. Doing so ensures that your hair (and body!) is getting the nutrients it needs to thrive. You could also think about incorporating vitamins into your health routine to fill in the gaps of whatever nutrients you might be lacking that are getting in the way of healthy hair growth.
Be Careful With Heat
This is something we stress all the time here at our natural hair salon! If you’re going to use heat, be sure to use a heat protectant. Use heat sparingly, as too much heat leads to damage, and too much damage can make it difficult for your hair to return to its natural state. If you’d like to rock a silky-smooth style, you can schedule an appointment for our Signature Swoope Press, a professional silk press that doesn’t damage your hair.
Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo
Shampoos that contain sulfates strip your hair of its natural moisture. A sulfate-free shampoo will gently cleanse and moisturize the hair, helping improve hair texture and minimize hair breakage.
Deep Condition — As Directed!
Overnight conditioning is popular, but unnecessary, and can actually damage your hair. There’s no need to condition longer than the time recommended on the product. That being said, you should definitely be deep conditioning on a regular basis! Incorporate a good deep conditioner as the final step in your wash routine. If you’d like product recommendations, we’d be more than happy to talk with you about what we think would work best for your hair goals and hair type!
Detangle From End To Root
Curly and kinky natural hair needs a lot of TLC, and no matter how well you’re taking care of your hair, you’re going to end up with some tangles. When getting them out, start at the ends and then slowly (and gently!) work your way up to the roots. While this can be more time-intensive, it cuts down on breakage.
Protect Your Hair At Night
Wrap your hair in a satin or silk scarf or bonnet at night. This keeps the hair moisturized and less prone to breakage. If you prefer to let your locks fly ree, a satin pillowcase will also work!
Wear Protective Styles
Getting your hair braided or put in another protective style that requires little to no manipulation for a few days or weeks helps retain length and support healthy hair growth.
Get Regular Trims
While many people who are looking for length put off regular trims, it’s actually vital for keeping your hair healthy. Trimming gets rid of broken and split ends, which can lead to more damaged hair.
